The Sermon on the Mount is arguably the greatest sermon ever given. It’s under 2500 words of concentrated teaching from Jesus. As one pastor said, “[It] is probably the best-known part of the teaching of Jesus, though arguably it is the least understood, and certainly it is the least obeyed.”
We find in it maybe the truest description in the Bible of what happens when the way of Jesus is lived out in us. It’s not a reward that we earn by following the Sermon, but a life that we receive as we walk in Jesus’ way. It’s a sermon that begs to be lived and practiced not just heard.
The Sermon on the Mount is the answer to the question “what kind of life does Jesus invite us into?” Life in God’s kingdom is upside-down from that of our world. But also it’s rich, full, blessed, and solid, and through it, Jesus invites us to a house on the rock amidst the storms of life’s difficulties.
